2003 NEW RETIREE WEBSITE CREATED BY JACK GOSE!

THOUSANDS OF APWU MEMBERS TO RETIRE OCTOBER 31, 2003!

Now that the draconian recommendations of the President’s Commission on the Postal Service have been reported to the President of the United States on July 31, you can expect thousands of APWU members to consider early voluntary early retirement (VER) from the U. S. Postal Service no sooner than October 31, 2003. The Postal Service estimates 58,000 APWU craft employees are eligible, and approximately 3,000 will apply for voluntary early retirement!

Under the terms of the APWU/USPS Collective Bargaining Agreement, all eligible APWU craft employees have been receiving letters from management inviting them to complete a form indicating they are interested in voluntary early retirement. An employee will be eligible if he or she is or will be age fifty (50) or older as of November 1, 2003, with at least twenty (20) years of creditable service as of Oct. 31, 2003. Employees of any age are eligible if they have or will have at least twenty-five (25) years of creditable service as of October 31, 2003.

We have just returned from the APWU National Postal Press Association Conference held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where we received in depth reports from President Bill Burrus and Legislative Director Roy Braunstein on the life or death fight to save our postal jobs, health care and retirement benefits. Almost 50% or half of current Postal employees are eligible for retirement by 2010, and most of these are predicted to retire.

We have launched a new APWU website hyperlink at
www.apwuflorida.org/retire/retireechapter.htm to provide retirement information for APWU active members, retirees, and their spouses/family members. The internet site has well organized sidebar links and over 125 links covering the wide world of retiree info from A to Z. We wish to thank Greg Dixon for the fantastic job he accomplished with information we gave him in creating a super retiree website.

All Florida Presidents, Editors, and Webmasters are invited and encouraged to add our 21st Century website hyperlink to your Area Local/Local website. The State of Florida has twelve (12) websites listed on the 21st Century Postal Worker national website map at
www.21cpw.com and Florida leads the nation in this emerging technology. Now is the time for all APWU leaders to step up to the plate to communicate and share APWU retirement information with all of our APWU active members, retirees, and spouses/family members.
