2004 APWU OF FL STATE RETIREE CHAPTER ACTIVE IN FLARA!

APWU OF FLORIDA STATE RETIREE CHAPTER ACTIVE IN FLORIDA ALLIANCE FOR RETIRED AMERICANS EVENTS!

Since 2002, eighteen (18) state affiliates have been chartered by the National Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA) and more states are coming on board every month. The National ARA website
www.retiredamericans.org lists charters for the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland/DC, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Washington. Florida Alliance for Retired Americans (FLARA) was the second state to be chartered, and is the only state organization with a website www.flara.org for everyone to enjoy. Illinois was the first state to receive an ARA charter in 2002.

The National AFL-CIO of sixty-seven international unions sponsored and approved the setup structure of the National Alliance for Retired Americans, consisting of over 3.2 million dues paying members, with a mission to ensure social and economic justice and full civil rights for all citizens so that we may enjoy lives of dignity, personal and family fulfillment and security. Go to the national ARA website and click on FRIDAY ALERT weekly to get the latest action news around the country on issues that affect all of our family.

Legislation and Politics, Health Care, Economic Security and Pensions, Housing and Services, Resources and Tools are some of the issues addressed by the ARA and FLARA. Learn about the new Medicare Law and Privatizing Social Security, and discussion forums on Prescription Drugs and Medicare by visiting the National ARA website

Our National APWU is one of twenty-one (21) AFL-CIO affiliated partners of the National ARA that share the Alliance’s vision for retired Americans. Our APWU of Florida State Retiree Chapter and Florida Suncoast Area Local Retiree Chapter are dues paying members affiliated with the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans. Unfortunately, few other State and Area Local/Local APWU organizations are affiliated with their state Alliance for Retired Americans, even though the National APWU Retirees Department encourages APWU States, Area Local/Locals, and Retiree Chapters to join their State Alliance for Retired Americans. New leaders with new ideas are crucial!

Florida APWU Area Locals/Locals may join the state FLARA organization with the approval of a body motion of the membership at a regular monthly union meeting to affiliate with FLARA. It would be proper for the Executive Board to pass such a motion prior to the local union meeting. PAYMENT OF DUES IS ONLY TWENTY-FIVE (25) CENTS PER MEMBER PER YEAR, with a minimum of twenty (20) members or $5.00 year. You do not have to have an active APWU Retiree Chapter organized in your area to join FLARA, although you could have such a Chapter. Step up to the plate and WIN!

FLARA currently has over ninety (90) union and community based groups affiliated, with over 181,400 dues paying members. Contact Tony Fransetta, President, FLARA, 12773 W. Forest Hill Blvd., Suite 211, Wellington, Fl. 33414 (in West Palm Beach area), or phone 561-792-8799, or E-mail to
FloridaARA@aol.com for more information on joining FLARA. A new Chapter member affiliation form is available online at www.flara.org for you to download and copy. It is as easy as 1-2-3, YES!

Individual union or family members may join the FLARA organization by paying $10.00 year member dues, and you may also join the National ARA organization by paying $10.00 year member dues. If you join the National ARA, you will receive the quarterly National AGEWISE magazine, and the state FLARA organization will receive one-half or $5.00 rebate back from the National ARA. You’re never too young to act now!

FLARA QUARTERLY EB MEETING ON DECEMBER 4, 2004

All 3050 APWU of Florida State Retiree Chapter members/families are invited to the next Florida Alliance for Retired Americans Executive Board Meeting and Rally to be held in West Palm Beach, Fl. on Saturday, December 4, 2004 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Holiday Inn hotel on Belvedere Road originally set for the meetings was damaged by two hurricanes and will not be in service until the end of December, according to a hotel reservations person. The FLARA Board of Directors consists of members representing all areas of Florida. Quarterly Executive Board meetings are held around the state in different locations every three (3) months. FLARA hosts an annual Convention and a Legislative Conference in Tallahassee each year also.

If you are interested in attending this quarterly meeting in December, call Jack Gose at 727-343-2998 home phone or E-mail me at
jak.gose@excite.com for an update. Another hotel in the West Palm Beach area for the same meeting dates is being selected and will be forthcoming soon.

As each generation ages, new challenges must be confronted and new opportunities must be created in order for organizations to continue being responsible and to grow. The leadership of ARA and FLARA will strive to organize from the ground up in order to fulfill our mission to protect the needs of the new baby boomer generation as well as the World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, and Iraq War veteran generations and their families as they retire. We wish you and your family a Happy Holiday season!
